Where do i start?
So, you’re thinking of a new kitchen – and you want to know where to start. How exciting! In our first blog post, as we introduce you to who we are and what we do, we will guide you through the first steps in the journey towards your new kitchen.
We are Nikita (Creative Director) and Katie (Assistant Designer), and we design, supply & install kitchens and interiors. Welcome to our blog! Here we will help you with tricky decisions and give you insight into kitchen design and project management. We will share ideas for how to design your kitchen, buying once and buying well. As a Mum (Nikita) and an Auntie (Katie), we firmly believe your family should always be at the forefront of your design.
Where to begin? The first thing to do is simply talk! It’s so important to discuss ideas, and gather inspiration. Something you have seen in someone else’s kitchen might not work in the space you have - but that’s not to say you can’t find an alternative. You need a sounding board – and who better
to start with than an experienced kitchen designer? (Hello!)
Our design process starts with a simple chat. We don’t charge for this – because we understand it is an honour to be invited into your home. Kitchens are expensive, and you need to get a feel for us before embarking on a design journey. It might surprise you how many thoughts crop up just by talking out loud in this meeting. You’ll never, ever hear us say, “we must place this order this month to hold this price” or, “we have a sale for a week - quick!” Yuck. We hate that, and when you are about to part with thousands of pounds we are pretty certain you do too! We encourage our clients to take your time; deciding too quickly might mean you change your mind later, and this can be a huge setback – especially if your new tiles are already on the wall when you decide you don’t like them...
At Honest by Design, the first thing we do NOT do is show you the new “trends”. We will listen to you and find out what you actually like, and more importantly, how you actually live! What works for you will not work for someone else – and that’s okay. It’s great, in fact – HOORAH for diversity and the reality that we are all different! We will point out factors you may not have considered and tell you why you might regret something that seemed like a good idea – and we will always suggest a better alternative. Our key role is to provide creative solutions that ensure you are happy with your new kitchen for years to come.
If something already works the way it is, you don’t have to change it. Equally, if your mum, your neighbour, your friend, your favourite Insta blogger all have the ‘latest fashion’ in their kitchen, but it’s not something you would usually consider… don’t do it! What use to you is a kitchen someone else likes? What’s the point in a kitchen that looks great but doesn’t have space for your favourite cookbooks? Your all-important coffee machine? YOU need to choose. But we know that can be overwhelming, so that’s why we are always HONEST with you. If you want lime green walls, or bright orange doors – it’s your kitchen; it’s your choice. We just might encourage you not to put those two colours together!

Worktops ✨ wooden worktops add warmth and a homely feel to a traditional kitchen, but it’s not always the most practical choice! Wood needs sanding and oiling regularly to maintain it, and we would always recommend avoiding wood around the sink.

A little behind the scenes…
We spend a lot of time sketching and planning to explore all the possibilities for your new space - it’s so important to consider the flow of traffic through the house, and not just the kitchen. This is where it is important for us to know more about how you use the rest of your home.
If you often go out for muddy walks, and use your back door more than your front door, this will make a big impact on the design of your kitchen layout. Where guests enter the kitchen when entertaining is also important; this would be the best place to position sociable seating such as stools at the island, to encourage guests to sit down and not linger in doorways or get in the way of cooking.
We think about access to the back door from the washing machine to hang your washing on the line, we consider the position of your dishwasher for conveniently unpacking into the kitchen cupboards, and we even take into account any furry family members with integrated dog beds and cat flaps (swipe to see a very happy pooch in his new bed)!

Where do you stand in your kitchen?
Deciding whether to include a sink or hob on your island is a purely personal choice and depends on how you use your kitchen. Some clients find they spend a lot of time at the sink, whilst others stand at the hob or preparing food on the biggest area of worktop available in the kitchen.
If you are considering an island or peninsula in your kitchen, it is important to think about where you spend most time in the kitchen, but also the way you use it. For example, if your kitchen sink is often piled with dirty dishes, the island might not be the best place for it!

OK, so a galley kitchen might not be on the top of your list, but keep an open mind! To make the best use of a space, galley style kitchens can be a really efficient layout when designed well. A galley style in a smaller open plan kitchen for example can create a natural divide between kitchen and dining, and keep small children safely out of the cooking zone. Two parallel runs of cabinets can also create a convenient cooking area with plenty of worktop space and storage, whilst the simplicity of a galley style kitchen can make the space feel larger, and avoids awkward corners. Utility rooms don’t have to be big to be beautiful 😍
Your utility room has to work harder than most rooms in the house, so it’s just as important as the kitchen when it comes to getting the design just right!
This particular utility room was originally a porch on the back of the house, a space that wasn’t fulfilling its potential. With stacked laundry appliances, a small sink, and additional storage, this new utility room creates the perfect functional space, taking a lot of pressure off the family kitchen diner.

To extend or not to extend? 🤔
Extensions are a popular home renovation, with many of our clients dreaming of big open plan kitchens, but an extension is not always necessary to create your dream kitchen! We believe in helping our clients save money where possible, and extending is often not the most cost effective option…
For this Woolton Hill, Hampshire kitchen, an extension was the only way our clients had considered making their kitchen work, but they were put off by the cost. We looked at the existing kitchen and suggested that with a more efficient design, we could create the kitchen of their dreams - without the costly extension!
The existing back door split the kitchen in half, creating a corridor through the middle, and a dumping ground in the unusable half of the room. This made the working area of the kitchen small and cramped, so our clients felt the space was not big enough for their dream family kitchen. We suggested moving the back door, making the kitchen almost twice the size for a substantially lower cost than an extension, and creating a sociable family kitchen within their existing space.

Loving this long drawn out summer! We have been a bit quiet on here so very sorry to anyone who has been looking for inspiration!
As a family-run business it can be really hard to juggle everything, and social media can end up at the bottom of the pile. Our daughter started school this week though so we are back to work and feeling fresh! I adore this time of year for feeling new, I think it’s the crisp mornings nature getting ready to shed all of the leaves and bits it no longer needs.
We are currently working on a dining room, snug and study for a lovely client… We look forward to bringing you progress pics. We then have three or four kitchens to fit by Christmas - depending how builders get on!
Greens, blues, greys and whites are still looking popular choices for our clients going forward, and we are even doing some bespoke colours with @kitchen_stori which is very exciting!
Although work-wise we are into the “I need it finished by Christmas” countdown, I will be here working surrounded by my beautiful @weaver.green textiles for as long as the weather allows!

When we first met this couple who live on the Hampshire / Berkshire border they were pulling in opposite directions on whether to go for modern handless or shaker. If you are lucky enough to have doors from a room out to the garden, always treat that garden space as an extension of the interior with furniture, and furnishings. This can be especially important for smaller houses, and in the summer months allows you to massively increase your living space! Lovely for long summer days at home.

We always try and create a space for “stuff”, no matter how small the kitchen is. Otherwise we find items like handbags, post and keys get dumped on islands and in working parts of the kitchen - which is annoying, and messy.

In open plan spaces, a cohesive design is especially important for a space that flows as one, whilst still functioning as multiple separate areas - such as kitchen, dining area, and snug.
A great way to improve the relationship between each separate zone is incorporating the same cabinets from your kitchen into your living spaces - including, but not limited to - bench seating, TV stands, sideboards, bookcases, dressers and other decorative display furniture.

For this client, we were tasked with incorporating their existing big yellow sofa into an open plan kitchen. We do love a challenge!
We used blues and dark greys in the living area of the kitchen to complement the yellow sofa and really make it pop as a key feature of the space. We added some yellow cushions to subtly tie it in to the bespoke bench seating for a cohesive design and homely interior.

A little behind the scenes…
We spend a lot of time sketching and planning to explore all the possibilities for your new space - it’s so important to consider the flow of traffic through the house, and not just the kitchen. This is where it is important for us to know more about how you use the rest of your home.
If you often go out for muddy walks, and use your back door more than your front door, this will make a big impact on the design of your kitchen layout. Where guests enter the kitchen when entertaining is also important; this would be the best place to position sociable seating such as stools at the island, to encourage guests to sit down and not linger in doorways or get in the way of cooking.
We think about access to the back door from the washing machine to hang your washing on the line, we consider the position of your dishwasher for conveniently unpacking into the kitchen cupboards, and we even take into account any furry family members with integrated dog beds and cat flaps (swipe to see a very happy pooch in his new bed)!

This particular utility room was originally a porch on the back of the house, a space that wasn’t fulfilling its potential. To extend or not to extend? 🤔
Extensions are a popular home renovation, with many of our clients dreaming of big open plan kitchens, but an extension is not always necessary to create your dream kitchen! We believe in helping our clients save money where possible, and extending is often not the most cost effective option…
For this Woolton Hill, Hampshire kitchen, an extension was the only way our clients had considered making their kitchen work, but they were put off by the cost. We looked at the existing kitchen and suggested that with a more efficient design, we could create the kitchen of their dreams - without the costly extension!
The existing back door split the kitchen in half, creating a corridor through the middle, and a dumping ground in the unusable half of the room. This made the working area of the kitchen small and cramped, so our clients felt the space was not big enough for their dream family kitchen. We suggested moving the back door, making the kitchen almost twice the size for a substantially lower cost than an extension, and creating a sociable family kitchen within their existing space.

Loving this long drawn out summer! We have been a bit quiet on here so very sorry to anyone who has been looking for inspiration!
As a family-run business it can be really hard to juggle everything, and social media can end up at the bottom of the pile. Our daughter started school this week though so we are back to work and feeling fresh! I adore this time of year for feeling new, I think it’s the crisp mornings nature getting ready to shed all of the leaves and bits it no longer needs.
We are currently working on a dining room, snug and study for a lovely client… We look forward to bringing you progress pics. We then have three or four kitchens to fit by Christmas - depending how builders get on!
Greens, blues, greys and whites are still looking popular choices for our clients going forward, and we are even doing some bespoke colours with @kitchen_stori which is very exciting!
Although work-wise we are into the “I need it finished by Christmas” countdown, I will be here working surrounded by my beautiful @weaver.green textiles for as long as the weather allows!

When we first met this couple who live on the Hampshire / Berkshire border they were pulling in opposite directions on whether to go for modern handless or shaker. In this Berkshire shaker kitchen, our clients insisted on keeping their navy blue aga whilst changing to a green colour scheme for their new kitchen. We were happy to save the old aga, suggesting a subtle shade of green with added touches of blue to complement the new kitchen, including a decorative sideboard for display. Don’t forget your outdoor spaces!
If you are lucky enough to have doors from a room out to the garden, always treat that garden space as an extension of the interior with furniture, and furnishings. This can be especially important for smaller houses, and in the summer months allows you to massively increase your living space! Lovely for long summer days at home.

Let’s talk about sideboards.
We always try and create a space for “stuff”, no matter how small the kitchen is. Otherwise we find items like handbags, post and keys get dumped on islands and in working parts of the kitchen - which is annoying, and messy.
In this Oxfordshire kitchen we used kitchen cabinets in a green as a feature colour, with curved end cabinets for softness.

In open plan spaces, a cohesive design is especially important for a space that flows as one, whilst still functioning as multiple separate areas - such as kitchen, dining area, and snug.
A great way to improve the relationship between each separate zone is incorporating the same cabinets from your kitchen into your living spaces - including, but not limited to - bench seating, TV stands, sideboards, bookcases, dressers and other decorative display furniture.
In larger open plan spaces, this additional furniture can introduce a contrasting or feature colour to create a more distinct separation between kitchen and living areas, whilst accessorising these zones with more colour or complimentary tones ✨

For this client, we were tasked with incorporating their existing big yellow sofa into an open plan kitchen. We do love a challenge!
We used blues and dark greys in the living area of the kitchen to complement the yellow sofa and really make it pop as a key feature of the space. We added some yellow cushions to subtly tie it in to the bespoke bench seating for a cohesive design and homely interior.
